On Saturday 6th June Grandmaster Keith Arkell played simultaneously against an East Budleigh combined team. The proceedings started in a grand manner with the ringing of wedding bells in the village Parish Church next door! Then in a double round display Keith played 18 games against his opponents without loss and conceding no draws. This was an impressive display by one of England's finest grandmasters. Keith has kindly annotated the following games which he considered were the best played against him during the afternoon. From his notes it can be seen that both opponents put up a stiff fight and both were close to drawing at one stage. Keith's endgame skill and his famous CK opening was much in evidence throughout the afternoon.
Two of the games played and annotated by Keith can can be seen HERE.
East Budleigh Explorers v Tiverton Tigers (Exeter Championship League)
This was an historic occasion for East Budleigh Chess Club being its 1st match in the Exeter & District Chess League. Two of the team, Mike Lee and Brian Le Masurier had never played in a league match before and Michael Lester was making a welcome return to chess after a 5 year lay-off.
For a long time it looked fairly even but long endgames on boards 2 and 4 gradually went against the home team.
In compensation East Budleigh managed a win on Bd.1 and gained a well fought draw on Bd.3. Although they lost the match 1.5 - 2.5 the event was looked upon as a success for such an inexperienced team.
Final score: 1.5 - 2.5 to Tiverton Tigers
