Torbay Chess Club is in
its second year of existence and is an amalgamation of Torquay and Brixham
Chess Clubs. The club is spearheaded by John Ariss, well known local
arbiter and organiser at various local chess clubs. Its aim is to firmly
re-establish a chess club within Torbay and create a club worthy of the size of
area it represents.
The club offers the
opportunity to play at Torquay on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Brixham on
Tuesdays. Monday nights at Torquay are for serious competitive chess and
this is the night that the club championship and home Torbay Chess League
matches are played. Wednesday nights are for social chess. It is also
the night that a rated Rapidplay competition is played, as well as regular
Blitz events. Tuesday nights at Brixham are for social chess.
Club nights start at 7
p.m. and their locations are:
Brixham Conservative Club,
Torquay Bridge Club,
When you turn into Zion
Road there is a cream coloured building straight ahead of you. Turn left at this building down a narrow road
and the Bridge Club is straight ahead. The Chess Club is on the top floor.
The plan for the
2017-18 season is to hold an internal rated competition and to play in
Divisions 1 and 2 within the Torbay Chess League, as well as the Torbay League
KO Cup. Hopefully, in the following season, the club will continue to
grow and we can enter teams in the DCCA League and more teams in the
There is a
£10 membership fee (£5 for juniors) for players whom play at Torquay
(newcomers are allowed to attend a couple of nights for free before
joining). You also pay a £2 table fee on the night. There are no
membership charges if you just play at Brixham, as well as no table fees.
