Commiserations to Dennis Cowley, who lost his DCCA
Champion of Champions final against Tim Paulden (see
News/DCCA for game annotated by Tim). Nonetheless,
it was a creditable showing in the tournament with a
rating of 188 for it.
Congratulations to Terry Greenaway for winning the
Intermediate (U140) section at Torbay Chess Congress
with 4/5 and a tournament rating of 165. Also,
congratulations to Phil McConnell (part-time member
of the club) for winning the Minor (U120) section
with 4/5 and a tournament rating of 132. Bad marks
for Mark Cockerton (Acting Secretary and author of
this bulletin) who stupidly forgot that part-time
club member Andrew Smith was playing at the event.

turned out for Teignmouth whom duly won the team
prize. Thus, as penance, I shall donate my winnings
to the club fund.
Four players from Torquay Chess Club went to
Paignton Congress and two won their particular
competitions. So, congratulations to John Ariss
(winner of the Reg Thynne U135) and Terry Greenaway
(winner of the Walker Minor U135) who came out with
tournament ratings of 162 and 161 respectively.
Thus, I shall be adjusting your handicap rating for
the upcoming club competition to that of Matt
Also, congratulations to Dennis Cowley who has
performed above his grade by first beating Plamen
Sivrev (Plymouth) and then Brian Hewson (Tiverton)
to reach the DCCA Champion of Champions final where
he will face Tim Paulden (Exeter). See
for more on this.
