The Philosophy:

The Club recognises and caters for the differing requirements of social players, making their first approaches to a chess club, and the experienced club player.

Newcomers are warmly welcomed and suggestions are made regarding appropriate opponents. Tuition and guidance are available and an informal competition (not obligatory) is provided. Regular coaching sessions are provided for juniors on club nights from 6.30 – 7.00. The friendly atmosphere of the club is enhanced by the availability of coffee, tea and biscuits. Please do drop in (and leave if you wish!) at any time during our playing hours.

For the more experienced player there is a club championship (90 minutes for the whole game + 30 seconds per move) and a Rapidplay tournament (25 minutes for the whole game + 10 seconds per move).

Details for the Addicts:

The results of games in each of the formal club tournaments are forwarded to the English Chess Federation for grading. The club is affiliated to Devon County Chess Association (DCCA).

The History:

The club is first mentioned in DCCA records as winners of the Mamhead Cup in 1955. This was during the period of active participation by our most illustrious predecessor, Andrew Thomas (1904-1985). Andrew was a mathematics teacher and House Master at Blundell’s School and was selected to play chess for England. He wrote two chess books, Chess for the Love of It and Chess Techniques.

During the 1990s, the club was able to assist in the early development of the young prodigy, Nick Frost, who ultimately achieved 3rd place in the World Amateur Championships.

Currently, Brian Hewson, our highest rated player, plays regularly in international tournaments and obtains creditable results against International Masters.

During the 2016/17 season the club won The DCCA Newman Cup (rapidplay competition for teams of 4 with aggregate grade less than 600)
